I consider this book an essential item in a MUA's kit. Why because since I began enrolling in different workshops and classes, there is always some pages from "Making Faces" handed it out to us as part of the class materials. The first half of the book covers everything from skin care and preparation, the facial structure to shading and highlighting. The second half of the book is a series of celebrity photographs in which Kevyn Aucoin works his magic and transforms them into a classic icon of the past. Its so had to pick a favorite, he transforms Courtney Love into Jean Harlow., Demi Moor into Clara Bow, Lisa Marie Presley into Marilyn Monroe just to name a few.
I read the book cover to cover by the end of the day and I fell in love with makeup artistry. I researched everything about Kevyn Aucoin and his work and learned how he was one of the youngest creative directors at Revlon and how he was discovered by Vogue and became their staple makeup artist for many of their cover shoots in the 80s until he passed away in 2002. Reading his books I admired the way he would always embrace enhancing a woman's natural and inner beauty instead of just a surface application. Since this day I believe it was in 2003 a year after Aucoin passed away, I started collecting more and more makeup to the point where I kept getting asked to do makeup for special events in my friends and families lives, weddings, graduations, etc. I enrolled in classes and workshops and I kid you not, in every class I have ever taken, Kevyn Aucoin is referenced or actual pages from his books have been handed out as part of the instructors teaching materials. I highly recommend his books but most importantly recommend people to embrace his philosophies. He wasn't afraid to criticize the industry that made him an icon. He believed no amount of makeup could mask an ugly heart, and I agree. So thank you Kevyn Aucoin for opening my eyes to a new form of artistry and reminding me that makeup is only a way to enhance my inner beauty. I will keep your legacy alive by sharing your philosophy with my friends, family and clients.
Everyone is beautiful to someone - Kevyn Aucoin
